Our mission is to honor, preserve, and promote the legacy of the Black Brigade of Cincinnati – the courageous group of African American men who, in September 1862, were among the first Black Americans to serve in the Civil War.
We are dedicated to:
Educating the public about this pivotal yet often overlooked chapter in American history
Documenting and sharing the individual stories of these brave men who volunteered to defend Cincinnati against Confederate invasion
Preserving historical sites and artifacts connected to the Black Brigade
Creating meaningful programming that connects their struggle for freedom and dignity to ongoing conversations about liberty, equality, and civil rights
Inspiring current and future generations through the example of these men who, despite facing discrimination and injustice, stood up to serve their community and nation
Through research, education, commemoration, and community engagement, we ensure that the sacrifices and contributions of the Black Brigade of Cincinnati are remembered, celebrated, and rightfully placed within the broader narrative of American history.
